What is the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme?

The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) is the Australian Government framework for rating the energy efficiency of residential buildings on a 0–10 star scale. It is administered by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) and adopted by every state and territory's building code.

When was NatHERS introduced?

NatHERS was established in 1993 by Commonwealth, state and territory governments. The 5-star minimum was adopted nationally in 2003, 6 stars in 2010, and 7 stars under NCC 2022 (in force from May 2024).

Who administers NatHERS?

The Australian Government's Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) administers NatHERS. Three accredited software tools — AccuRate Sustainability, FirstRate5 and BERSPro — produce ratings, and assessors are accredited through ABSA, BDAV or HIA.

Is NatHERS mandatory?

Yes. The National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 requires all new Class 1 dwellings (houses) and Class 2 dwellings (apartments) to meet a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating plus a Whole-of-Home energy budget. Major renovations triggering a building approval are also captured.

Does NatHERS apply to existing homes?

NatHERS was historically used only for new builds and major renovations. From 2024, NatHERS for Existing Homes is being rolled out to give existing dwellings a star rating, and several states (ACT, VIC under MDS rules) require disclosure at point of sale or lease.
