NCC & NatHERS Zone Guide

Australian Climate Zones — All 8 NCC & NatHERS Zones Explained

Australia is split into 8 National Construction Code (NCC) climate zones and 69 NatHERS sub-zones. Your zone determines the insulation, glazing and design strategies needed to reach a 7-star NatHERS rating under NCC 2022. Find yours below.

All 8 NCC climate zones

1
Zone 1 — Tropical
Hot humid summer, warm winter

Examples: Darwin, Cairns, Broome

Cross-ventilation, deep eaves, light-coloured roofs, ceiling fans, reflective insulation. Heating loads near zero; cooling and humidity control dominate.

2
Zone 2 — Sub-tropical
Warm humid summer, mild winter

Examples: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Townsville

Shading + ventilation focus, moderate insulation, reflective sarking. Some winter heating in cooler nights.

3
Zone 3 — Hot arid
Hot dry summer, warm winter

Examples: Alice Springs, Port Hedland

High thermal mass, small west windows, evaporative cooling viable. Big day-night temperature swings.

4
Zone 4 — Warm temperate
Hot dry summer, cool winter

Examples: Mildura, Dubbo, Kalgoorlie

Balanced heating + cooling. Insulation R4+ ceilings, double glazing on west, shading critical.

5
Zone 5 — Mild
Warm temperate

Examples: Sydney, Perth, Adelaide (coastal)

Both heating and cooling matter. Passive solar design, R5 ceilings, low-E glazing on west and north.

6
Zone 6 — Cool temperate
Mild temperate

Examples: Melbourne, Geelong, Wollongong

Winter heating dominates. Heavy insulation (R6 ceilings, R2.5 walls), double glazing, draught sealing essential.

7
Zone 7 — Cold
Cool temperate

Examples: Canberra, Hobart, Ballarat, Orange

Heating-dominated. R6+ ceilings, R2.8 walls, double or triple glazing, thermal mass on north-facing slabs, full draught proofing.

8
Zone 8 — Alpine
Alpine

Examples: Thredbo, Mt Buller, Cooma

Extreme cold. R7+ ceilings, R3+ walls, triple glazing, full envelope sealing, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (HRV).

NCC zones vs NatHERS sub-zones

The NCC's 8 zones drive prescriptive minimums — what R-value insulation, what glazing performance, what shading. The NatHERS 69 sub-zones are far more granular: each has an hourly weather file (BOM TMY data) that AccuRate, FirstRate5 and BERS Pro use to simulate exactly how your home will perform across an entire year.

Two homes in NCC Zone 6 (say, Melbourne CBD and Ballarat) can fall into very different NatHERS sub-zones with materially different heating loads — which is why postcode-level modelling matters.
